L’ENFANT (2005)

Luc & Jeanne-Pierre Dardenne ’s recent Palme d’Or winner @ Cannes has the flow of a religious parable, but without a deity to help things work out. Bruno is a petty thief & a pathological liar who thinks nothing of selling his newborn son on the black market when his girlfriend Sonia brings him home from the hospital. These two are like feral cats, but Sonia, like any cat, will go the distance to protect her child while our tomcat is perplexed at all the fuss. What follows is a series of disastrous moves leading Bruno further & further down a moral spiral as he tries to make things right. He’ll hit bottom before cracking open a virgin spring of conscience. The cinema verite style of the Dardennes takes a good bit of the curse off their calculated scenario, but it’s all too redactive* to take as seriously as they’d like us to. * Or do I want to say reductive? Hmm?
