THE STORK CLUB (1945)

Betty Hutton only had three or four chances to really show off her considerable stuff and this dopey little farce ain’t one of them. She’s a hat check girl at The Stork Club who saves an old coot from drowning. Turns out, the guy’s a millionaire who anonymously becomes her benefactor causing havoc for Hutton at work & in the romance department. Barry Fitzgerald, Robert Benchley & Don DeFore head up a cast that looks reasonably promising on paper and Hutton gets a couple of good numbers (especially Hoagy Carmichael ’s swinging ‘Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief’), but you’ll see why Paramount let this one slip into Public Domain.
