MR. MOTO TAKES A VACATION (1939)

Political tensions between Japan & America, dealt a lethal blow to the world’s one & only Japanese Jewish/Hungarian crime expert, more criminal provocateur than a criminal detective in Peter Lorre's delightful impersonation. Director Norman Foster, who largely shepherded the series, must have known the end was nigh as the production is particularly snazzy for the series. There’s pace to the action, real laughs in the gags and Lionel Atwill & Joseph Schlidkraut heading an unusually tony supporting cast. In this one, Mr. Moto hopes to catch a super criminal not by solving a crime, but by advocating one. And he’s using the Queen of Sheba’s ancient crown as bait. A fine send-off. Mr. Moto rules!
