Pablo Trapero’s social-realist drama about the declining working class in Argentina as the boom years receded is quite effective at detailing the routine desperation of the times. And ‘times’ have not exactly improved since. But the focus (on a single middle-aged crane operator who has to leave his home, family & friends to go south to find work halfway through the film) is so narrow that the story can be easily seen as an aberration rather than a national indictment. ( You know it’s the latter, but only because of our expectations, not from anything Trapero brings to the subject.)
