A mile long cast (Sinatra, Lollabrigida, Peter Lawford, Steve McQueen, Paul Henreid, Brain Donlevy, Dean Jones, Charles Bronson, et al) and a director, John Sturges, with a charmed touch on WWII themed pics (GREAT ESCAPE, EAGLE HAS LANDED, BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK) don’t harbinge such a flat out stinker. Set in Burma, decrying the madness of war, FEW has a bad case of KWAI envy. But here the take-no-prisoners finale is kept conveniently off-stage so we don’t feel any guilt during the massacring heroics. Frank & Gina define antipathy as they rote recite their leaden dialogue, but there’s a bit of fun to be had watching pre-Disney Dean Jones and fourth-billed Steve McQueen effortlessly establish star presence.
