OCEAN’S ELEVEN (2001)

Considering the probability of All-Star fabulousity run amuck inherent in this remake of Lewis Milestone ’s sleepy Rat-Pack/Vegas ‘caper’ pic, Steven Soderbergh deserves credit just for not turning in a very, very special Entertainment Tonight segment. (Only the onanistic, self-regarding buddy/buddy crap between Brad Pitt & George Clooney strays out of bounds.) After the spiffy character intros, it's fun to watch the big cast really work together, but do they really earn that handsomely arranged, Debussy drenched send-off? The unearned nostalgia is poured on pretty thick. Still, it makes a lovely ending. If it were an ending. Alas, the demands of sequelitis brings us a brief, mood demolishing coda. Note that Andy Garcia pinch hits respectably for Al Pacino, and that Julia Roberts looks miserable & unhappy.
