A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE (1988)

This was one of the ‘DEKALOG’ tv films Krzysztof Kieslowski expanded slightly for theatrical redux. It’s about love romantic & deviant, which turn out to be one & the same. Tomek is a 19 yr-old boy who’s become fixated on the thirty-something beauty across the courtyard in his housing complex. He spies on her, takes on her milk delivery route, steals her personal letters and would seem to be a stalker/creep of the first magnitude. Yet, that’s not his effect at all. He’s burned past the Peeping Tom stage of sexual voyeurism and is now in the throes of romantic love. (More ‘Werther’ than Norman Bates.) The object of his attention goes thru all the stages of confusion, revulsion, joking interest, humiliation (hers & his) before coming to an alarming yet believable decision. The ending was changed from the original which makes the story both more like a fairy tale and more deeply perverse. This is close to perfect moviemaking, and Kieslowski was still warming up.
