TALKING HEADS (1987/98)

A trio of Alan Bennett dramatic monologues, all starring Patricia Routledge (A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE, A LADY OF LETTERS and MISS FOZZARD FINDS HER FEET) does itself no favors by showing just how strait-jacketed the format looks when played as a set. Lives of quiet desperation are tricked up through illness or happenstance into something mildly ironic: death, incarceration or polite prostitution. No reflection on Routledge to note that one will amuse, two may bemuse, but three’s a’snooze. The plays are best seen in a format that mixes various performers or, even better, savored one at a time.
