THE THIN MAN GOES HOME (1944)

Myrna Loy’s glam looks are about the only thing that’s holding up by the fifth (penultimate) episode in the beloved detective series. With original director & co-scripters gone, M-G-M downgraded most of the elements to just above ‘B’ status with a lusterless supporting cast and a unimaginative production on the barely redressed backlot small-town set. (You keep expecting Andy Hardy ’s family to stroll by.) Fortunately, William Powell & Loy manage to retain most of their charm & chemistry needing none of the corny camera tricks that belittle poor Asta. Things pick up near the end with some actual detective work & a smarty-pants self-referential drawing room denouement. (For some real entertainment, don't miss the classic Tex Avery ‘Screwy Squirrel’ short hiding in the extra features.)
