Empty-headed crime caper/romance pours on the fashion (ghastly late ‘60s stuff) & Pop Art visuals (multiscreen redundancies right out of a World’s’s Fair Expo) to slight effect in this much liked film. Coming off of his prestige breakthru helming IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, Norman Jewison tried to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear of a script combining Hitchcock ’s TO CATCH A THIEF with Lelouch ’s A MAN AND A WOMAN. Steve McQueen does quite alright in the Cary Grant spot, but Faye Dunaway brings unconscionable acting ability to her Grace Kelly wannabe with sorry results. What sub-text could she possibly be searching for? You do get some of those Noel Harrison (son o’ Rex) musical stylings to groove on, but it's probably best to keep this one as a happy memory for the Baby Boomer set.
