George Lucas ’s first feature creates a vision of the future by using carefully framed ‘found’ modern architectural elements (a la ALPHAVILLE/'65 and FAHRENHEIT 451/'66; Woody Allen would goof on the same idea in SLEEPER/’73) and some of his effects are smart & eerie. Stanley Kubrick would offer a similarly sterile white-on-white look and robotic acting in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE the same year, but without stealing so shamelessly from 1984 and BRAVE NEW WORLD. This may be the ultimate ‘Geek’ film,’ but for non-Geeks, it’s a very long ‘Twilight Zone’ episode and it pales next to any episode from Patrick McGoohan 's ‘The Prisoner/'67.’
