INUGAMI (2001)

Writer/director Masato Harada directs a stylishly elegant and convincing erotic ghost story that centers on a lonely spinster working in semi-isolation as a fine papermaking artisan and how a handsome young teacher, new to her island, unleashes evil forces (wild dog spirits) when their affair grows serious. If only the horror aspects had been subtly touched on instead of tipping into a narratively incomprehensible family curse saga with incest, rebirth, a swapped baby, & reverse aging, all capped off with an attempted mass family massacre. Yikes! They've got Verdi’s LA FORZA DEL DESTINO in the score, but what they really needed Wagner’s GOTTERDAMMERUNG.
