THE MAGDALENE SISTERS (2002)

You can hardly blame the filmmakers for the neverending revelations of systematic abuse within the Catholic Church, but it surely dulls the drama of this well meant tru-life horror tale. Concentrating on three (plus one) young women (an unwed, a flirt and a rape victim) forced into what amounted to an Irish Catholic gulag run by sadistic sisters, the film is unable (unwilling?) to hold culpable church hierarchy, government and, especially, assenting parents, all of whom knew to some extent what they were signing on to. Well done, earnest, very depressing.
