STREET OF NO RETURN (1989)

Cult-megger Sam Fuller, 77 at the time, took his final shot in this twisty noir tale with Keith Carradine as a David Bowie-like pop star who gets his vocal chords sliced when he falls for the wrong femme fatale. Now a homeless wino, he still manages to pull off a proper revenge and even gets another chance at tru-love & redemption. The pic opens with an impressively staged race riot that barely ties into the narrative, but Fuller can no longer properly organize his time-jumping tall tale or maintain the claustrophobic visuals he used to pull off back in his studio heyday. Not without its moments, but a bit of a mess.
