MEMENTO (2000)

This tricked up modern noir, with its "two steps back for every one step forward" continuity, might fall to pieces if played out in forward motion. But as a bon-bon for the USUAL SUSPECTS/'95 crowd, it easily bests that puzzle pic with characters that add up and a style of presentation & performance that are all of a piece. As the grieving widower with Post-Its & Polaroids for memory, Guy Pearce makes an impossible part work under Christopher Nolan’s confident, action-savvy helming. And the clear California shooting style (and skies) turns the typical noir gloom topsy-turvy, perfectly matching the film’s 'bassackward' narrative scheme. Just don't watch it twice.
