CHICAGO helmer Rob Marshall catches sophomore slump in this painfully misconceived, pleasureless epic that tries to be a sort of Geisha GONE WITH THE WIND. The gorgeous production dies of overkill while the script never generates enough character rapport/interest to carry us along. And just how compelling an idea is a geisha’s sentimental journey, anyway? There’s as starry a cast as an American company could muster out of the Asian film talent pool, but perhaps because they’re working in English, no one is at their best with the glorious exception of Youki Kudoh as ‘Pumpkin,’ who morphs post WWII into a sort of Japanese Bette Davis in looks and spirit. She’s fun.
