SOLOMON & GAENOR (1999)

It’s Wales, 1911, and Ioan Gruffudd & Nia Roberts get all star-crossed in this romantic tragedy that has its heart in the right place, but its mind . . . well, elsewhere. See, he’s a Jewish boy, but doesn’t tell her. She gets preggers, but doesn’t let him know. They want to marry, but wouldn’t ya just know they’d chose National Welsh Pogrom Day to elope! That’d upset anyone’s plan. Thrown out of their respective homes and kept from communicating, he still manages to trudge through winter’s fury to reach her. Alas, he forgot his Yiddisher mama’s first rule: "Never go out without a proper coat."
SCREWY THOUGHT OF THE DAY: Okay, it’s really not this bad. In fact, it’s often effective in its ultra-conventional fashion, think ABIE’S IRISH ROSE as a Welsh tragedy. But you still could get the giggles just by noticing what a ringer Gruffudd is for SNL’s Andy Samberg.
