ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968)

10-ton adventure/Cold War tale gives you two pics in one, both dogs. First up is a barely competent nuclear sub to the North Pole journey, but the second part (mission sabotge) is a mind-boggling botch on every level. The last act is almost heroically awful, but the whole draggy thing only showcases the sorry state of craft that was Hollywood’s default standard, circa late ‘60s. Patrick McGoohan (a superb actor who deserved better) is a lively presence, but the rest of the cast is bored (Rock Hudson), uninteresting (Tony Bill), ill-used (Jim Brown) or winning the "bad accent of the year" award (Ernest Borgnine). Check out the opening sequence just to enjoy the obscenely phallic spaceship design. (A clue to why this was Howard Hughes favorite film?)
