DAYS OF BEING WILD (1990)

Wong Kar Wai tries to distill the essence from all those tales detailing the whys & wherefores of women who go for the bad boys. He makes do with mere traces of story lines involving gangsters, drugs, cops and the search for missing parents, never quite landing on a single bit of terra firma plot. Everything is reduced to attitude & style, but does it add up to anything? Depends on wha’cha looking for. As the irresistible bad boy, Leslie Cheung works like the dickens to channel Brando’s STREETCAR mystique, including a brief approximation of the Brandso 'look' while wearing a ‘wife-beater’ T-shirt at breakfast. Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau & Jackie Cheung are all fine as the unhappy also-rans. Wong Kar Wai has few peers at this sado-romantic nonsense, but a little of it goes a long way in this early effort.
