LUTHER (2003)

With partial funding from a Lutheran based org., you expect a hagiography. But with Joseph Fiennes, Alfred Molina, Bruno Ganz & Peter Ustinov in the cast, it at least looks tempting. Alas, except for Ustinov’s wily performance (he's frail, but still game, a touch of the ol’ SPARTACUS spirit remains intact), this is a handsomely mounted, but inert Hallmark Hall of Fame style "quality" product. Fiennes, a more natural film actor than his brother Ralph, has yet to put paid on the promise shown in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, and his time in the sun runs short.
SCREWY THOUGHT OF THE DAY: Fiennes has got to be the skinniest Luther ever to appear in front of a camera. Wasn't the man famously fat?
