ON THE AVENUE (1937)

Fondly remembered Fox musical turns out to be typically dopey stuff (Dick Powell ’s stage revue tweaks upper crust playgirl Madeline Carroll, but love conquers all), especially since megger Roy Del Ruth lets the set pieces run on for far too long. But it has a fine (and well performed) Irving Berlin score (two standards, two undervalued goodies & two novelties), third-billed Alice Faye memorably warbling ‘Last Years Kisses’ and The Ritz Bros showing some slick steps along with their OTT comedy riffs.
