STEAMBOY (2004)

A decade after Katsuhiro Otomo ’s highly regarded (though not by me) AKIRA sees him switch from mayhem in a futuristic Tokyo to mayhem in 1860s England. Boy, Dad & G’dad engineering geniuses try to harness the potential power of a super-charged steam ball for analogue gears & shafts before the government takes it all away while the female brat who inherited the company whines and kicks her doggy in frustration. Some handsome Industrial Age backgrounds can’t make up for charmless characterizations or a story that ignores logic & motivation while the typically OTT violence quickly palls. STEAMBOY becomes a compendium of much that’s wrong with the genre.
