THE MOST TERRIBLE TIME IN MY LIFE (1993)

Kaizo Hayashi’s retro noir is overloaded with New Wave attitude & parodistic irony, but as the story gels, the cute gimmicks begin to strip off as something more substantial percolates to the surface. Masatoshi Nagase is great as a dick who calls himself Mike Hammer & gets in over his head with a poor immigrant lad who ain’t what he seems. Hayashi shows technical flair, especially in the chases, and nicely details the rival gangs running Yokohama’s underworld using accents of stylized violence that work within the framework of the steadily sobering story and character arcs. What tone does the sequel take?
