75th OSCAR SHORTS (2003)

What a great idea, distribute those hard to find Oscar Nom’ed Animated & Live Action Shorts as a DVD. Unlike the attention-getting squabbles in the documentary division, these categories remain far under the radar of even the hardiest film devotee. If the winning choices (THE CHUBBCHUBBS!, THIS CHARMING MAN) are typically wrongheaded, there are three or four quality goods on display. In animation, THE ROCK, a German parable on man, terrain & relativity comes off best, while the three also-ran live shorts (a French heartbreaker, a Hitchcockian riff from Belgium and a stunningly effective mini-Lillian Hellman meller set in Africa, but made in Australia) are a trio of O’Henry-like fables worth their short running time.
