Helmer Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu is apparently glued to portmanteau storytelling, and if the cross-relationships he spots from one set of characters to another are shallow & arbitrary, they function much like ‘hooks’ in a Pop song. Here, in his breakout pic, that song would be "How Much Is That Doggy In The Window’ as we get three (and a half) shaggy dog stories with only the initial tale (involving dog fighting rivalries & romantic epiphanies amongst the underclass) living up to his smash & burn technical wizardry behind the camera. The other two tales (a fashion model whose happiness is as ephemeral as her looks and a half-crazed hitman who finds his lost humanity when he rescues an equally murderous fighting dog) can’t overcome their cliches in conception & execution. But the film has a lot of good intense perfs and is less pretentious than his more recent output.
