ARROWHEAD (1953)

Little talked of/wildly influential Western specialist Charles Marquis Warren (he created GUNSMOKE) made this smoldering Cavalry saga about an Apache hating scout (Charlton Heston) whose warnings go largely unheeded by the military until it’s almost too late. With generous samplings from oft-told tales of Custer, Geronimo and John Ford, the surprisingly luxe production never hits a proper narrative stride; the romantic interludes are particularly unconvincing. Yet the unapologetic tone holds your attention along with superior supporting perfs from the underrated Brian Keith and especially Jack Palance’s Eastern educated, fatalistic Apache who looks (startlingly) like Billy Crudup.
