AUDITION (2002)

The ultra-prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike has a Stateside niche in the ultra-horror/gore genre, but this film leans toward the misogynist psycho-love castration market. Got that? Sort of in the vein (pun intended) of FATAL ATTRACTION. It wants to be an ultra-creepy tale of a stuck-in-a-rut middle-aged widower who's a judge at a faux acting audition when he’s really hoping to land a cutie for life. It’s a real casting couch call. And wouldn’t you just know that his meek discovery turns out to be a pain & mutilation freak! Miike is often effective in mixing techniques to fit the story’s darkening moods, but the straightforward dismemberment scenes are too chopped up (pun intended) with flashbacks & was-it-only-a-dream cop-outs. The effect distances us so the pic never moves or disturbs.
