BATMAN BEGINS (2005)

Helmer Christopher Nolan doesn’t so much ‘save’ the BATMAN franchise, as ‘REBOOT’ it; restarting from scratch after Joel Schumacher’s homoerotic camp. Frankly, the series downturn set in early, with Tim Burton’s BATMAN RETURNS, in which only Michelle Pfeiffer shined. But Nolan, along with leads Michael Caine, Christian Bale & Gary Oldman found the same vein of gravitas that made Michael Keaton so effective in the original. Nolan doesn’t have much flair for the big action sequences which are edited to death & shot so close-in that you can’t see the kinetic logic amidst the mayhem (is this BATMAN or Iron Chef?); he has a misplaced fondness for those cornball gag lines right out of ‘80s James Bond films; the story is less than inspired (ditto the villains); love interest Katie Holmes has no rapport with anyone on screen & looks distractingly like Sally Fields; but just by refusing to guy the material he saves the day. . . and the franchise. With everything in place, the inevitable sequel might really take off.

Post-Script after seeing said sequel (THE DARK KNIGHT) on the big screen . . . It does! It does!
