Like so many William ("Wild Bill") Wellman pics, this Battle of the Bulge (in Bastogne) army grunt chestnut doesn’t live up to its inflated rep. The cast is in there pitchin’ (esp. Ricardo Montalban, Van Johnson & Marshall Thompson), but the film’s stylistics alternate uneasily between a pre-WWII studio aesthetic & post-war location realism. If you're able to adjust to the wild swings in tone & the inconsistencies in presentation, the film can still make its effect. But, like so many of Dore Schary’s personal projects during his brief reign as M-G-M's studio head, it has the stink of the "well-made" play clinging to it.
