BEYOND THE FRINGE (1964)

Since nothing grows mold faster than yesterday’s social satire, the fact that half the material in this legendary revue w/ Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett & Jonathan Miller still works is nothing to sneeze at. (The best bits are backloaded so hang in there.) And if the show is probably best celebrated for its qualities as comedy progenitor, Cook remains a riveting presence & Moore a fabulous all-round entertainer (especially his French & Britten/Pears art songs). Bennett, with his flutey voice, is more "a project in development," while Miller, more mimic than actor, only comes into his own in the Shakespeare travesty. And dig some of the deeply non-PC gags on Jews, Blacks & Nancy Boys. Oh, dear.
