BEYOND TOMORROW (1940)

Retitled BEYOND CHRISTMAS to help its DVD prospects, this maudlin piece of sentimental whimsy is just odd enough to keep you watching . . . in fascinated horror. Eccentric old business tycoons Aubrey Smith, Harry Carey & Charles Winninger come to the aid of two NYC lost souls (Jean Peters & Richard Carlson) and when the old codgers die in a plane crash, their ghosts take over until one-by-one they are called to heaven or hell. Will they hang around long enough to keep vocal sensation Carlson from running off w/ Helen Vinson, his co-star in a big B’way musical? That ever ambitious lenser Lee Garmes, fresh from his flirtation w/ studio independence via Hecht/MacArthur, produced this thing, That’ll teach ya.
