THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998)

This shaggy dog story from Joel & Ethan Coen is technically a lot less fussy than their usual pushy product. And if it takes its time getting into gear (there’s a lot of bowling), it pleasingly morphs into Raymond Chandler territory not so far removed from Robert Altman ’s masterful THE LONG GOODBYE, but with a plot closer in structure & spirit to THE BIG SLEEP. Naturally, the film is overloaded with Coen style eccentrics, but here they serve as a counterweight to a hilarious & endearingly laid-back perf from Jeff Bridges as a slacker-supreme. He’s in hog heaven because he didn’t need to get into shape for the pic. In fact, he goes all Shelley Winters on us, a la POSEIDON, packing on a gut just for the occasion. He’s so good, he could take the curse off twice the quota of Coen wise-ass smarm.
