Superior spy thriller has the moves, grit & cunning long absent in the gizmo addicted JAMES BOND & MISSION IMP circuses. With underlying narrative element shriveled to the point of abstraction, the filmmakers knowingly ape Hitchcock’s McGuffin engineering (some sequences are hyped-up near quotes), but skimp on the serious emotional weight Hitch laid on top of his suspense substructure. Dialogue & characterization count as McGuffins here with director Paul Greengrass using a choppy, jangly, jump-cut technique so effective it could make taking a pee suspenseful. If only he didn’t paint all the frenzy with the same brush; and work so close to the action that all those cool international locations barely register on screen. (We might be anywhere . . . or nowhere.) Still, on its own terms, very good indeed. With Matt Damon’s mournful Bourne registering superbly as a killer Energizer Bunny.
