This late entry in the runaway-heiress/screw-ball genre plays haphazardly (is it to be IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT or TAMING OF THE SHREW?; come to think of it IT HAPPENED just about IS the TAMING OF . . .), but James Cagney & Bette Davis work surprisingly well together and the farcical situations don’t overstay their welcome. (PLOT: Her dad, Eugene Pallette, offers Cagney $10 a pound if he’ll zip Bette away from bandleader/bridegroom Jack Carson.) The supporting players are all good company, especially Harry Davenport as hotel keeper of a ghost town, but you do have to weather more cactus-in-the-tush gags than are good for you. Try to check out JIMMY THE GENT/'35 to see Cagney & Davis in something more worthy of these titans.
