CALIFORNIA SPLIT (1974)

Exceptionally enjoyable, if minor, Robert Altman pic, & one of his few underrated titles. He’s lousy with overrated ones. As always, it’s the script, not the cast, not the multi-layered sound, & not the ensemble technique that makes the thing go. This loosy-goosy gamblin’ fever story is wonderfully observed and also a super ‘70s time capsule of archetypal small-time rollers & track dwellers. Dozens of characters come to life, look fast for Jeff Goldblum at 22, and recall what a sweetie Paula Prentiss’s’s sister Ann was. In the lead and having the lucky streak, George Segal comes off as a guest performer in the Altman stock company, but Elliot Gould is completely in his element in what may be his best perf.
