CAMP (2003)

Laughs, tears & revelations at a camp for "B’way Babies" are set off when a burnt out composer/director and a straight All-American boy are added to the mix. Writer/director Todd Graff ’s debut is one of those obvious ideas that’s also a good idea, and the slightly awkward perfs and lack of polish help rather than hurt it. And letting the kids do their own mentoring, rather than cuing the usual teacher/student dynamic keeps his modest set-up from overloading. Still, listening to these kids overwork their vocal chords is a bit worrying. To see what’s missing here, try and find the (admittedly unsatisfactory) adaptation of Alan Ayckbourn’s wicked A CHORUS OF DISAPPROVAL/’88 with Jeremy Irons.
