CAPTAINS OF THE CLOUDS (1942)

James Cagney’s only Technicolor outing from his glory days @ Warners was this WWII recruiter pic about a gaggle of Canadian ‘bush’ pilots (Cagney, Alan Hale, Dennis Morgan, George Tobias, Reginald Gardiner) who crash the RCAF to varied effect about halfway thru the running time.  Cagney is the tough egg who can only redeem his wayward ways by playing martyr, natch.  Michael Curtiz megs with his customary zip & camera-wise style, but has less success handling the Hawksian buddy-buddy bonding that leaves gorgeous Brenda Marshall out on a limb.  A couple of the trick effects no longer convince, but the film largely comes off.  Added bonus puts Reginalds Gardiner & Denny on screen together.  Who says you need a scorecard?
