Though ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER/’99 is generally seen as launching a mature cycle of masterpieces from Spanish writer/director Pedro Almodovar, this previous pic was more than mere harbinger. It opens with something of a mea culpa from Almodovar (who once said that Franco’s dictatorship didn’t exist for him & his generation), along with a Luis Bunuel clip & some oblique story references, before jumping ahead from the 1970s to the 1990s to chart an absurdist Forza del Destino/Man Who Shot Liberty Valance tale about two criss-crossed triangular love affairs. The sheer bouncy, colorful craft of Almodovar’s filmmaking has a new, easy command and his casting instints have never been surer. Emotionally, the film never quite connects as you want it to, but everything else is in place for his new level of mastery.
