COSI RIDEVANO (1998)

Handsome, but unswervingly politically correct drama from the talented Gianni Amelio, whose masterful LAMERICA (about an underfunded capitalistic entrepreneur who falls into the quicksand of an emerging Post-Communist country) avoided all the claptrap found here. Enrico Lo Verso again stars but now he’s a swarthy illiterate Sicilian trying to sustain his beloved/clever/unworthy scapegrace kid brother in late ‘50s Turin where the decks are stacked against Southerners. But Amelio can’t resist stacking the narrative to fit his political design, and too much time is spent staring into space just long enough to give fate a chance to catch up and wreck any hope these guys earn. Disappointing.
