COURTSHIP OF EDDIE’S FATHER (1963)

Under Vincente Minnelli ’s ultra-smooth direction, this sentimental dramedy about a new widower coping with son, career & romance features Kennedy-era psychological & sexist attitudes as alarming as the interior decor of its NYC apartments. When not blowing up, Glenn Ford ’s Dad plays consistently 'off' the beat as he chooses between kooky Stella Stevens (she picks him up in a Times Square arcade!), posh & chilly Dina Merrill and motherly divorcee Shirley Jones. Poor Stella ends up with Jerry Van Dyke, who's coarse instead of funny in one of those roles Tony Randall was so good at. Kid actor Ron Howard is exactly like his latter directorial self; all too expert at warm/fuzzy/emotional outbursts, but leaving an oddly metallic/mechanical after-taste.
