CRUSADES (1995)

Monty Pythoner Terry Jones co-wrote & hosts this effective four-part BBC series on the great religious crusades of the 1100s, so there’s no surprise that the tone is irreverent, knowing and downright cutting. But then, the whole movement was one of the great follies of the barbaric West at a time when the East (or Middle-East, I suppose) held the enlightenment advantage. Some of the stylistic choices, animated murals & modern parallels, don’t always pan out, but the line of events is meticulously laid out, easy & fascinating to follow, and regrettably convincing/believable. The one big blemish lies in Jones’ slight, yet crucially obstructive speech impediment, which makes many names & places impenetrable.
