CRY-BABY (1990)

Atypical John Waters pic is surprisingly conventional, especially the first half, a ‘tab’ version of GREASE with a slight raunchy/grotesque flavor. (It certainly comes off better than the homogenized still-life that GREASE became on the big screen.) Interest grows once our impossibly pretty lead (Johnny Depp) gets thrown in jail on some trumped up charge & makes like Elvis in JAILHOUSE ROCK to some tasty faux-‘50s tunes from Patrick Williams. (Brother of Paul?) Waters can’t stage an action sequence to save his soul, but the musical numbers come across. And unexpectedly, in a teen fable that sides so completely with the outcasts over the squares, Waters shares the musical wealth in true ecumenical fashion. Decide for yourself if the amateurish acting helps or hurts.
