D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE (1956)

You may have thought June 6th was memorable due to the invasion of Normandy deciding the fate of millions and the course of WWII, but here, its deeper significance comes in settling the romantic triangle of Robert Taylor (fresh off the M-G-M payroll, if looking none too fresh), Richard Todd and Dana Wynter in cornball fashion w/ a tragic O’Henryesque twist as kicker. Trying for an adult tone (everyone seems to be openly cheating in Wartime London), the story and characters come across as either self-deluded or self-centered. Zanuck may have made his D-Day pic, THE LONGEST DAY, as penance for this.
