Much admired WWII fact-based story about an absent-minded professor type (Michael Redgrave) who invents a water-skipping bomb that could take out the Ruhr Valley dams, and the flying squadron (led by Richard Todd) who deliver it. The F/X work shows its age, but works on its terms, and the bouncing bomb is a wonder, but the film doesn’t add up dramatically. And why so few interesting characters? Try a double-bill of BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER and SINK THE BISMARCK! to see what’s missing here. Todd is very good, but wait’ll you hear what he calls his beloved black dog.
