Writer/helmer Alex Proyas’ futuristic fable was one of the earlier attempts to make a graphic novel come to life on screen, but it hasn’t the consistency of style & tunnel vision that made his Goth/comicbook adapatation of THE CROW/'94 such a claustrophobic success. Rufus Sewell shows how well he takes to the camera even in this messy tale as he attempts to stop an entire race of dying intergalactic types who have created a sunless world as a lab to learn human ways. (It just as confusing in the film.) Along with police dick William Hurt (in one of his better post-leading man roles), mad doc Keifer Sutherland & girlfriend Jennifer Connelly (blank & unresponsive), they uncover all the ways this tall-tale prefigures THE MATRIX. The big mind-melt finale is a bust, but it sure beats sitting thru Parts II & III of THE MATRIX.
