DAVE CHAPPELLE: FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH (2004)

This hour-long concert pic, shot in San Francisco, only moves beyond stereotypical Comedy Club racial & sexual tropes halfway in when Chappelle gets both more specific & more personal. Scabrous & foul-mouthed in the extreme, he’s an exceptionally winning performer with technical chops to spare. (Chris Rock eat your heart out.) Yet, there’s something deeply discomforting in watching him work his act in front of this largely male, largely white audience. They whoop indiscriminately, leaving Chappelle’s slyer social digs to fall by the wayside. No wonder the guy dropped out to get his head together.
