Hidden inside this coarsely made chase pic, designed for quick sell on the intl. action market, is a perfectly acceptable character piece with Lee Marvin as a veteran Yukon policeman who wants to be left in peace, forced to hunt down trapper Charles Bronson, who also wants to be left in peace. Bronson is ambushed after saving an injured fighting dog from Ed Lauter (in a lip curling piece of hokum acting) & his gang. But Bronson ain’t so easy to take down. Men are shot, justice must take its course. Andrew Stevens is stuck playing a rookie Mountie while Carl Weathers gets the token sacrificial black-guy role. Longtime James Bond editor, Peter Hunt, who jumped to helming for ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE, is surprisingly awkward on the close action stuff. But even under these circumstances, Marvin & Bronson don’t just phone it in and the plot mechanics of the chase genre seem indestructible.
