A late Sinatra vehicle showcasing the exhaustion of a puffy-faced Frankie and shoddy late ‘60s Hollywood production standards. Abby Mann ’s script on an incorruptible dick investigating a gay murder (with political graft complications) is so eager to shock that each taboo-breaking line lands like a lead brick. One-take Sinatra didn't exactly bring out the best in helmer Gordon Douglas, so even Lee Remick and Jacqueline Bisset seem as drab as those industrial green walls in the police station, eerily glowing in Joseph Biroc ’s ultra-sharp focus. Still, hearing Sinatra thank Renee Taylor (playing Jack Klugman’s wife) for the "stuffed derma" helps a bit . . . or, at least, it couldn't hurt.
