The best thing about ELF is its modesty. Compared with over-produced Yuletide/feelgood family monstrosities like POLAR EXPRESS & GRINCH, ELF’s cheery North Pole settings & analogue F/X are a relief. (Alas, the trick foreshortened shots of man & elf pale compared to those in DARBY O’GILL.) Helmer Jon Favreau isn’t able to maintain the charm of the prologue once our big human elf, Will Ferrell, lands in NYC, and he’s unable to orchestrate the story pacing & character-based emotional payoffs in the true Capra-esque manner he’s aiming for (lots of MR DEEDS GOES TO TOWN in here), but he wraps things up in about an hour & a half, so there’s time to hit the Dairy Queen before bedtime.
