FATHER & SON (2003)

A companion piece to MOTHER & SON (https://maksquibs.blogspot.com/2008/05/mother-and-son-1997.html), Alexander (RUSSIAN ARK) Sokurov ’s mesmerizing poetic fantasia on parental/filial love has a tactile intimacy that could discomfort (the actors, especially the young looking father are all handsome devils), but the film leapfrogs an incestuous tone to land at some sort of idyllic idea of physical union set far beyond the mechanics of sex. In much the same way, narrative is used as mere ellipsis to set up the warring lines of affection that "son" has to navigate between his widowed Dad, his girl and his friends. Unforgettable, even the location spotting (in Riga?) enthralls.
